Embassy premises

The Embassy of Finland in Japan is located in Minami-Azabu area in Minato Ward, one of Tokyo's central Wards, in which premises of some 60 other foreign embassies are also located. The Embassy building was constructed in 1983. An old dignified Japanese oak (Japanese: shii no ki ) decorates the inner court of the Embassy building.

Since 1998 the office of the Finnish Institute in Japan is also in the embassy compound. The offices of Tekes, Finpro, FinNode Japan and the tourist office MEK can be found in the neibourhood.

The Embassy of Finland launched an investigation in 2007 to tap possibilities for redevelopment of its real estate in Tokyo. Arup Japan was selected as the project consultant and an agreement was signed between the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Arup Japan in April 2008.

An architectural idea competition for a new Embassy Building in Tokyo was held and the winning entry by Architects Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Ltd. was announced in March 2009.

Due to the economic outlook and the situation of real estate markets in Japan the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland has put the Embassy real estate development project temporarily on hold.
