The newly founded Finland Association is aiming for international goodwill and cultural and economic exchange with Finland. The Finnish lifestyle that appreciates coexistence with nature and local community can be experienced in the Finnish village of Hamamatsu Miyakoda where Nordic housing is represented. Nordic delis and shops selling Marimekko fabrics and Scandinavian interior can also be found in the area.

Juha Niemi, Minister-Counsellor at the Embassy of Finland in Tokyo, represented the Embassy at the launching event. In his speech Minister-Counsellor Niemi expressed his appreciation for the newly found association and talked about the warm and long-standing relations that Japan and Finland share, which are also reflected in the big number of friendship societies. The establishment of the Hamamatsu Finland Association is a great gift for Finland which is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its independence this year.

The activities of friendship societies can vary from holding seminars and gatherings and providing exchange programs and courses to promoting economic exchange between Japanese and Finnish companies. The oldest friendship societies, The Japan-Finland Society and Hokkaido Finland Society, were founded already 40 years ago. The activities of friendship societies are greatly appreciated for maintaining vibrant relations between Finland and Japan on their own part, and the comprehensive community of friendship societies will continue to be a great asset for cooperation.
