Today the relationship between our countries is closer than ever. Daily flights connect Helsinki with Tokyo and several other Japanese cities. Over 260 000 visitors from Japan made the trip to Finland last year, and the number of my countrymen who want to come here and learn more about Japan is also increasing.
We are witnessing more and more links between our societies in the fields of culture, science and technology as well as trade and investments. Our peoples respect and understand each other. Japan is highly appreciated in Finland as a country that shares many of our own foreign policy goals. We both aim to create a more sustainable world that respects human rights and the nature. We also believe in international cooperation that is based on treaties and rules.
I am very excited and honored to start my task as the Ambassador of Finland to Japan. The joint statement issued during the visit of President Niinistö to Tokyo in March 2016 provides us with a very clear roadmap towards a common future. The highly qualified staff of this Embassy is at your disposal to create an even more active and wide bridge between Finland and Japan.
I look forward to further strengthening the relations between our countries during my posting in Japan.
