Autumn with Finnish film

SPUTONIK OY, 2017
The Other Side of Hope
The Other Side of Hope (2017)

Spend the cooling autumn evenings in Tokyo by enjoying Finnish cinema – including Aki Kaurismäki's most recent work and the third Moomin puppet animation film! A total of 14 new and old Finnish films will be shown across multiple events and venues around the city.

The film season begins with Kaurismäki's "The Other side of Hope", telling the story of a traveling salesman and a Syrian refugee. The movie was previously shown in Japan during the UNHCR's Refugee Film Festival where its main actor, Sherwan Haji, came to visit. The film will be shown only once – on the 8th of November - during the Finland Film Festival, but it will be shown again on the 2nd of December in Shibuya's Euro Space cinema, before it departs on a road show tour of Japan.

The season continues with the 9th Finnish Film Festival, taking place in Roppongi's

TOHO cinema from the 4th of November until the 8th, showcasing some of the newest films from Finland (program). In addition, before the films, you can enjoy the exciting final episode ("Finland Japan Award") in the series of short animated films featuring the embassy's twitter mascot, Fintan, for the first time on the silver screen (more information about Fintan and the animated project here)! Teemu Nikki's "Euthanizer" will also be shown at the Tokyo International Film Festival (25th of October to 3rd of November), where it participates in the festival's film competition.

Another 6 Finnish films – carefully curated by the director Aki Kaurismäki himself – will be shown at "Finnish Films Aki Kaurismäki loves" , taking place at Shibuya's Euro Space cinema from the 25th of November until the 1st of December. The selection includes films with influences to the director's own work, as well as some of his personal favorites from 1952 until 2009. The selected films, schedule and other details will be released in early November.

Moomin and the Winter Wonderland

Finally, the third Moomin stop motion film, "Moomins and the Winter Wonderland", (trailer) will be shown at the Marunouchi TOEI-cinema from the 2nd of December. In the Japanese version, the voice of Moomintroll is performed by actress Rie Miyazawa, with songs performed by the singer Sarah Alainn.
